California Taxes Soda to Help With Childhood Obesity

Is soda what’s making our kids fat? According to BD.com, California is trying to create a tax on sodas that would be used to help fund costs caused by childhood obesity.

The bill would “would slap a 1-cent levy on every teaspoon of added sugar and other caloric sweeteners in commercial beverages sold.” Who is flipping the bill for all this? Companies that bottle the soda.

While I think this bill has the very best of intentions, I’m not sure it will accomplish its intended purpose. When we were kids we all drank sugar soda, mostly because they didn’t have the diet stuff for the most part. Yet nobody was fat. We exercised. I still think that’s the key to it all. But if this bill helps get kids out and exercise every day, well then, it may have an impact.

What do you think?

  1. Obesity and diabetes are becoming more and more of a problem these days. Actually it is easy to avoid being overweight by just having the proper diet and exercise.
