So you have been told that you have diabetes, first of all you are not alone, in fact 23.6 million Americans have diabetes, or 7.8% of the population. Its not the best news, but with good support and a healthy lifestyle it is totally under your control.

Here are some tips:

· Talk to your doctor and ask any question you may have to gain a good understanding of the condition and your body, don’t worry they won’t bite.

· Diet for diabetes is the same diet we should all be following, a healthy one.

· Watch portion sizes particular the carbohydrate foods, such as bread, rice, pasta, cereals and potatoes as these foods have a big effect on your blood sugar.

· Limit sweets like cakes, candy and regular soda and read the next point!

· Consult a registered dietitian to give you tailor-made nutritional advice with a plan designed by you, you will more often than not find that it’s not all that bad.

· Get support from friends and family its often an opportunity for the whole family to get into better shape.

· Get a glucometer to monitor your blood glucose and start a food and glucose diary. I know it sounds like work, but it is invaluable to help you understand the relationship between what you eat and your blood sugar.

· We are all individuals and what works for you may be different from someone else.

· Don’t listen to the horror stories of all the complications your story will be a success story.

For great resources look up a registered dietitian or certified diabetes educator in your area, often your local hospital may also offer classes.

Go to the American Diabetes Association website or Diabetes UK.
