Today we’re talking to Vicki Newell as part of our diabetic interview series. Like many diabetics, she didn’t realize she had the disease at first. All the more important to get regular check ups and listen when your body doesn’t feel “quite right.” Vicki’s family helps keep her positive and she offers some great advice on keeping your blood sugar as close to normal as possible.

What type of diabetes do you have?

Type 2

When was it diagnosed, and how?

It was diagnosed November 27, 2007. I hadn’t been to the doctor in many many years. I went to an appt. with my husband, whose dr. I had known for 15 yrs., and he practically forced me to get some blood work done. The results were shocking because I felt fine. My A1C was 9.5 and I had high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I didn’t really have any symptoms of being a diabetic except frequent urination and dark pigment around my neck which had been there for years, but I didn’t know either was a sign of diabetes.

What’s the biggest challenge in managing your blood sugars?

Staying away from sweets and eating the correct size portions.

Tell me more about yourself: Hobbies? Favorite way to spend time? Family life? Etc.

I’m married with 3 children and 3 grandchildren with another one on the way. I love walking on the beach, biking, photography, movies, trivia and boating.

How has your life changed (if it indeed has) since you got diabetes?

I have to be more conscious about what I eat and make sure I exercise daily. I was very surprised how good exercise is to help keep your blood sugar in normal range.

What keeps you motivated to stay positive?

My family
